A public consultation has recently been launched on improving stroke services across West Surrey which affects both St Peter’s Hospital and Ashford Hospital and services in the local community.
A number of events are taking place across this area which we would encourage local people to attend and give their views, also giving people the opportunity to ask questions.
- Friday 17th March – Education Centre, St Peter’s Hospital, drop-in anytime between 2.00 – 4.00 pm
- Tues 21st March, Goldwater Lodge, Wishbone Way, Woking, GU21 3RT, 7.00 – 9.00 pm
- Weds 5th April, Hythe Centre, Thorpe Road, Staines, TW18 3HD, 7.00 – 9.00 pm
- Monday 10th April, Education Centre, Ashford Hospital, drop-in anytime between 2.00 – 4.00 pm
As a key provider of stroke services, Ashford & St Peters hospitals have been working with local Clinical Commissioning Groups to scope these proposals which importantly include expanding and improving our specialist stroke unit at St Peter’s Hospital. By consolidating hyper-acute and acute stroke services (specialist hospital care during the first week of someone suffering from a stroke) into larger units, they can save more lives and help reduce disability caused by stroke.
Under these proposals there would be no stroke service at Royal Surrey County Hospital, and patients from the Guildford area would receive their specialist care at St Peter’s instead. (Patients from south of Guildford would go to Frimley Park Hospital).
The consultation is also proposing plans to improve Early Supported Discharge (more people going directly home from hospital where appropriate) and to consolidate specialist inpatient rehabilitation care which they currently provide at Ashford Hospital. For this specialist rehabilitation care, they are still working through the best option for local patients which might mean services at Ashford Hospital and / or Woking Community Hospital.
